Rowing Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Scott as its new Chief Executive Officer.
The former Director of the Australian Institute of Sport (2001-2005) and CEO of the New South Wales Institute of Sport, Scott has also had success as CEO of the 2007 World Aquatics Championships and Director of Sport and Recreation Victoria.
A highly successful and experienced executive both in Australia and internationally, Scott will bring strong leadership skills to the role, coupled with commercial experience and exposure to sport at all levels. Most recently the High Performance Director of Swimming Australia, Scott also has a clear understanding of performance sport.
Rowing Australia Chairman, Rob Scott, said of the appointment: “Michael is a highly regarded leader in sport and he shares our vision of being the number one rowing nation in the world.
“Michael brings a unique set of skills from his leadership of national and state institutes of sport, commercial events management and leading high performance sport programs in Australia and internationally.
“We are delighted that Michael will be joining the Rowing Australia team as we prepare for the Rio Olympics and beyond.”
Having work closely with rowing in his prior roles at the Australian Institute of Sport and the New South Wales Institute of Sport, Scott is eager to lead the growth of rowing in Australia: “Rowing is one of Australia’s oldest and most successful international sports with a proud history.
“I am honoured to take on the role of CEO as we strive to become the number one rowing nation in the world.
“Being number one in the world requires not only gold medal performances at Olympics, Paralympics and World Championships, but development of a vibrant rowing community across Australia that incorporates our state and club partners and showcases what makes rowing a fantastic sport for all ages.”
Mr Scott will start with Rowing Australia in May.

Rowing Australia is the national governing body for the sport of rowing. Formed in 1925, Rowing Australia and its affiliates represent in excess of 20,000 active members and 60,000 participants ranging from young rowers at school through to those at universities and in the wider community right through to masters rowing. Rowing Australia member associations operate in seven states with over 185 schools and 156 clubs offering rowing programs.

This is a vision that will guide the sport in the future and will be based on promoting participation and development across communities and supporting rowing’s high performance athletes in their quest for gold medals.
Rowing is one of Australia’s oldest international sports, with international success dating back to 1867 when Edward “Ned” Trickett won the World Sculling a Championships. Australia is one of the leading rowing nations in the world with a history of strong performance at the Olympic Games.
